FINE ARTS Offerings at All Saints Lower School
ART: The All Saints art program provides opportunities for students to express individual ideas through a variety of media suited to their abilities and expressive needs. Lower School students learn art history, gain insight into art criticism and increase their art vocabulary through a special feature of the art program entitled "Artist of the Month."
MUSIC: The general music class experience for Lower School students is based primarily on the methodology and philosophy of Kodaly. The Kodaly method is a child developmental approach. It is a highly structured and sequenced curriculum that relates to the child’s own development, physically and intellectually. This developmental sequence moves from the known to the unknown, from the total experience to the individual experience, and from activities to symbols. Concepts and elements are prepared, presented, and practiced in three ways: aurally, physically, and visually. Singing skills and basic music literacy are continuous goals. In each grade level, musical skills are reinforced through singing, reading, writing, memory, inner hearing, form, improvisation, listening, movement and dance. Third grade marks the beginning of the recorder experience. “Special Music Offerings” are presented every Friday during chapel, providing individual students and entire classes with many performance opportunities. The following non-musical elements may be achieved through children’s involvement in the music program at All Saints:
- increased levels of social understanding and acceptance
- a building of esteem through successful experiences during the music lesson
- an establishment of higher levels of thinking
- creativity and expression
- development of large and small motor skills, eye-hand coordination, and aural skills.
STRING ORCHESTRA: Orchestra is offered to Third and Fourth Grade students. Beginner and Intermediate string classes are offered two or three times weekly. The program gives students a basic foundation in ensemble playing and in instrumental techniques. Students are requested to furnish their own instrument and music stand. An additional monthly fee is required.
