FOREIGN LANGUAGE at All Saints Middle School

FRENCH:
Seventh Grade students have the option of taking Spanish or French (Latin is required for all seventh grade students). This is a beginning-level class and students are introduced into basic vocabulary and structure of the language. Classes are designed to meet ACTFL national Foreign Language Standards including basic proficiency in written and communicative acquisition of information through listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Discussion of French culture and customs is also emphasized.
Eighth Grade French class is a continuation of earlier French language instruction. Listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills are emphasized. Instruction includes further explanation of the structure of the language, vocabulary building, and basic present and past tenses of verbs. In addition to textbook materials, the study of French culture and customs is presented in order to give students a wide range of opportunities for practice in communicative learning.
Ninth Grade French is a continuation of eighth grade French language instruction. Students receive 1 credit toward high school graduation. Listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills are further emphasized. Instruction includes further development of the structure of the language, extensive vocabulary building, and expansion of the use of the French verb. The study of French culture and customs is integrated into the daily plans of the course. Students who complete three years of French (7th - 9th grade) will receive 2 foreign language credits toward their high school graduation requirements.

LATIN:
The study of the Latin language and the ancient Roman civilization is an integral part of All Saints Episcopal School’s mission to provide students with a classical education. The goal of the course is to introduce students to the foundations of our western civilization, to teach them to recognize and appreciate the classical subtexts of American culture, and to gain a greater understanding of modern languages.
All students in the Seventh Grade are required to study Latin. Using the Cambridge Latin Course textbook, supplemented by other sources, students are taught to gain a knowledge of Latin through reading and grammatical analysis. The study of English words that are derived from Latin roots further strengthens and expands our students’ verbal and vocabulary skills and helps prepare them for the more advanced writing and reading they will do in high school and college.
Students may continue with Latin in Eighth and Ninth Grades. At these levels, the course work builds on the reading skills acquired in seventh grade. Although more consideration is given to the abstract study of Latin grammar and the cultural background, the primary emphasis is on developing competence in reading and understanding intermediate-level Latin texts.
Students who complete three years of Latin will (7th - 9th grade) receive 2 foreign language credits toward their high school graduation requirements.

SPANISH:
Fifth and Sixth Grade Spanish classes are beginning level courses which provide more opportunity to practice vocabulary skills learned in Lower School Spanish classes. Grammatical structure is introduced to enable students to begin producing Spanish sentences independently.
Seventh through Ninth Grade Spanish classes are taught using a multi-sensory communication based approach, and include study of the culture and customs of the Spanish speaking world. Classes are designed to meet ACTFL National Foreign Language Standards including basic proficiency in written and communicative acquisition of information through listening, speaking and writing. Students who complete three years of Spanish (7th - 9th grade) will receive 2 foreign language credits toward their high school graduation requirements.
