HISTORY Offerings at All Saints Middle School

Fifth Grade history is an overview of United States history from the pre-history through 1800 and its effect on our lives today. The students build a framework of basic events in the history of the United States on which they can add details in later years. Emphasis is placed on hands-on practical experiences with the big ideas of history as well as map skills, and critical thinking. Students are given the opportunity to use their creativity on projects having to do with Native American life and the early apprentice system. Fifth grade students take a trip to Virginia to visit sites students study about during the year.

Sixth Grade history is an introduction to World History. Students learn the geography, history, culture, and economics of the countries and continents other than the Americas. Current events are included to keep the students informed on a national and a worldwide basis. Throughout the year students are assigned various projects to challenge the varied learning styles and to encourage research on an individual basis.

Seventh Grade history is designed to acquaint students with the rich history and background of the state of Texas. Emphasis is placed on learning about the early history of the Lubbock area. The Living History Trail, a unique approach to history, involves on-site portrayal of characters and their contribution to the settlement of West Texas. The curriculum also includes a five day trip to Paint Rock, San Antonio, Goliad, Austin, and San Angelo to study history in the field.

Eighth Grade history is designed to investigate early American History to 1877. Major areas of study include geography, the first Americans, the founding of America, framework of the American government and economic system, Native American policy, and the Civil War and Reconstruction. Current events are used to connect past information to the present. Throughout the year, students will complete various assigned projects to challenge various learning styles and promote critical thinking. The curriculum also includes research and field trips as well as application of history.

Pre-AP Ninth Grade history is designed to examine World History, prehistory through World War II and the Holocaust. Emphasis is placed on geography, the rise of civilization, formation of world governments, world religions, monarchies of Europe, major world wars and cultural phenomenon. Throughout the year students will complete various projects to challenge all learning styles and promote critical thinking. Literature is also a major focus in World History. Novels, poetry, portraits of historical figures, and primary and secondary source materials and documents are all used to focus on major historical events. Opportunities to conduct research, partake in field trips, review historical films, apply knowledge of history, and study of current events are all included in the World History curriculum.
