LANGUAGE ARTS at All Saints Middle School

Fifth Grade students are engaged in an enriched comprehensive literature-based program that reinforces and extends concepts introduced in earlier grades. The integrated language approach combines listening, speaking, writing (spelling, language usage, mechanics) and reading. All students are expected to read widely and write often. Reading selections include nonfiction, classic and contemporary literature, mythology, and a wide range of prose and poetry which reflect an interdisciplinary approach to reading and social studies. Writing assignments encourage creative expression, structural accuracy and development of style.
Sixth Grade students read selections that include classical works, traditional styles, and modern writing. The curriculum is designed to expose students to a wide variety of materials. Drama, nonfiction, mythology and novels are part of a program that encourages students to become active participants in the reading process. Students learn to analyze literature from structural as well as thematic viewpoints. Vocabulary development, comprehension skills and patterns of organization in written work are areas of special emphasis.
Jr. High School language arts courses build and expand on the student's foundation from All Saints Middle School. Detailed grammar analysis is stressed with recognition and application in both written and oral communication. Classical and modern literature is presented with emphasis on comprehension, sequence and literary terminology. The Jr. High language arts goal is to have the student well prepared to excel in any high school language arts program.

JOURNALISM:
Being a staff member of the Patriot Ledger offers students in Fifth through Ninth Grade an opportunity to write for publication. Serving on the staff allows students to develop insights into the importance of accurate news reporting and the role of the newspaper in the community. A greater understanding of the communication process allows students to recognize the influence of the media and the responsibility of its proper use.
