MATH Offerings at All Saints Middle School
Fifth Grade mathematics provides opportunities for students to deepen their understanding of mathematics and its practical applications. While not slighting the development of computation competence, the course emphasizes conceptual understanding and problem solving. Topics include estimation, mental mathematics, multiplication, division, decimals, fractions, metric measurement, and the development of calculator skills. Small classes ensure that individual needs are met. Those students who work at a faster pace will experience percent, geometry, statistics and probability.
Sixth Grade mathematics emphasizes the practical application of mathematical skills. Students demonstrate the understanding of: number concepts, mathematical relations, patterns, algebraic concepts, geometric properties and relationships, measurement concepts using metric and customary units, probability and statistics and the reasonableness of a solution. Operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division involving whole numbers, fractions, and decimals are used in the problem solving process. The operations of multiplication and division involving whole number and decimals are also used in the problem solving process. Those students who work at a faster pace will experience operations with integers and rational numbers.
Seventh through Ninth Grade mathematics emphasizes the study of algebraic and geometric mathematical sciences and their applications to help students understand real world situations. Students are expected to use scientific calculators and are introduced to graphing calculators and their applications. Reading and writing about mathematics in order to be able to function outside of school is stressed. Special emphasis is placed upon logical and analytical reasoning through non-traditional as well as traditional problems. Advanced Placement (Pre-AP) Algebra I is offered to qualified Eighth Grade students. Pre-AP is offered in Geometry, Algebra II, and PreCalculus to qualified Ninth Grade students.
