SCIENCE Offerings at All Saints Middle School
The Middle School/Jr. High School curriculum at All Saints is a laboratory and inquiry based exploration of the sciences. The disciplines covered include life, earth, and physical science. The program is designed as an integrated curriculum with each year's learning building on material covered the previous year. Students in Fifth Grade, Sixth, Eighth and Ninth Grades participate in the Science Fair to help augment the classroom learning experience. Students in Sixth Grade through Ninth Grade are eligible to advance to the State ISEF competition. Field trips are taken during the year to enrich and enhance the curriculum. Educational field trip opportunities are offered during the summer on a biannual basis. These trips are generally out of the country and expose the students, Seventh through Ninth Grade, to a greater opportunity for hands on experiences.
*Fifth Grade students experience a laboratory based curriculum. Topics include matter, classifying and changes, motion, forces, weathering process, invertebrates, plants and biomes. Emphasis is placed on lab safety and correct lab techniques.
*Sixth Grade students are provided a science curriculum rich in laboratory experiences. Topics which are studied in-depth include sound, light, weather, ecology, and the human body. Emphasis is placed on safe and technically correct laboratory experiences. Sixth Grade students are required to participate in the school Science Fair with opportunities to advance in competition.
Seventh Grade is a laboratory based study of matter, motion, forces, energy, cells, plate tectonics, earthquakes, and volcanoes. Emphasis is placed on lab safety and how to properly use lab equipment.
Eighth Grade students are exposed to a laboratory based curriculum. In-depth studies include the chemistry of matter, electricity, magnetism, oceanography, and heredity. The students have the opportunity to use gel electrophoresis equipment sponsored by Texas Tech HHMI program. The students are provided opportunities to develop research techniques using Internet.
*THE YOUNG ASTRONAUT PROGRAM, an optional opportunity for Fifth and Sixth Grade students, uses the excitement of the U.S. Space Program to ignite a spirit of adventure and culminates with a trip to the McDonald Observatory or the Johnson Space Center.
